Van Halen, after more than a decade of false starts, is finally ready to rock in close to its original form. This mainstay of late '70s and early '80s arena rock is in the midst of a reunion tour few thought would ever happen, after aborted efforts in 1996, 2000, 2002 and last year.

Hyperkinetic frontman David Lee Roth is back in the fold - and apparently in good graces - with cofounder and guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The latter has survived numerous health scares (a hip replacement and tongue cancer, among them) and addiction troubles that necessitated a 2007 rehab stay.

The Atlantic City tour, which stops 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, was delayed from the original March 28 date while the band took an unplanned six-week hiatus due to Eddie Van Halen's unspecified health problem.

"I feel excellent," Van Halen told People magazine after resuming the tour in early April. "I'm healthier than I've ever been. It's wonderful."

Completing the 2008 lineup is a family affair of Alex Van Halen, Eddie's brother and the band's drummer, and 17-year-old bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's son with actress Valerie Bertinelli, and a musician said to have serious rock star potential.

Wolfgang Van Halen takes the place of Michael Anthony, whom published reports indicate was not invited to join the tour.
Van Halen proved an immediate success with the release of its 1978 self-titled album, which showcased Eddie Van Halen's brilliant guitar licks and Roth's vocal theatrics.

Over the next few years, the band propelled its career with a string of hits, including "Dance the Night Away," "You Really Got Me," and a cover of Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman." The often tense relationship between lead singer Roth and Eddie Van Halen finally boiled over in 1985, when the singer made his exit.

The band soldiered on as a popular touring act and had some chart success with Sammy Hagar supplying lead vocals through 1996, and again from 2003 to 2005. Gary Cherone of Extreme filled the lead gap between 1996 to 1999. The band was largely inactive between 1999 and 2003.

After Van Halen, Roth, aka "Diamond Dave," tried various solo and group configurations to little success. He had a brief, disastrous reunion with Van Halen in 1996 before falling to D-list celebrity status, including a short-lived attempt in 2006 to replace Howard Stern as a syndicated morning radio host.

For fans, the reunion concert no doubt will seem as if the clock stopped in 1984, when Van Halen - and rock music in general - were mainstays of the charts and MTV.

About a third of the 24-song set list comes from Van Halen's 1978 eponymous major label debut, with the remainder divided among its next five albums. The set fittingly wraps with the group's biggest single and sole No. 1 hit, "Jump," from its "1984" release.

Post-millennium Van Halen promises arena rock spectacle at its biggest, with a giant screen, the requisite laser show and enough amps to have the group's core 40- and 50-something audience reaching for the memories of their misspent youth - and their earplugs.
